Animals

  • There is little cover in a grassland so if an animal is being chased by a predator the prey has nothing to do except to run if no cover is found.
  • Many animals in the grassland can dig burrows for protection against predators.
  • The grasses in the tropical grasslands have tough cell walls which makes it hard for animals to digest, but most animals there have tough stomachs like the bison to digest it.

  • In the grassland there isn't many trees for animals too live in or to hide in.

Plants
  • Some grassland plants grow extensive roots, they grow upward from their base, or have chemicals to deter grazers.

  • Living in a dry climate, with long, hot summers and strong winds, grassland plants run a big risk of dying out if they don't hold enough water that is why they hold more water

  • In moist grasslands, some grasses form thick carpets of intertwined roots called sod.

  • Both grasses that form sod and those that form clumps are perennials, meaning they survive from year to year. but some prairie grasses sprout, grow, produce seeds, and die, all in one year.
